announce today... :) :)

A ranger that lives near Fredericton gave a ticket a guy for speeding on the #2 between Nackawic and Fredericton.

The rangers in NB are now going to have the same authority and duties as the Maine Game Wardens.

I also know more Mounties will be working with them during the hunting season.

Tickets also have been issued against the ATV riders with points being removed from their drivers licence.

No one is suppose to be in possession of a firearm without a PAL. A person can hold or use a firearm if someone with them has one.

You are not even suppose to have one in your possession for very long without one.(Getting it renewed or inherited a firearm)

That is what I was instructed.

Sorry AG but you are wrong. DNR enforcement offices are now under Public safety and have all powers of a police officer.
Bear I have been wrong before!!!!lol When you say "Now" can you clarify since when. It's funny up this way a guy that was suspended from having a firearm for 10 years, was out and about hunting with a rifle....just sayin' and rangers never blinked an eye! Is it possible that you can be half a public safety officer????

Anyway let's get back on topic........5 Day moose hunt....Thanks!

The only people against the 5 day hunt are the suppliers and outfitters. They are concerned the success rate will be higher.

To them it is a longer hunt with less licence holders to supply or accommodate.

I don't think the province cares because they can jack the fee up any time.

I think with a 5 day hunt moose can be harvested nearer to logging roads etc. and we would see less moose shot in bogs or ponds.

It would give a moose hunter a quality hunt with less chance of adverse weather.

The way the draw is handled could accommodate the repeat appliers to enable them to get picked.

In other words if you get drawn this year you shouldn't be able to apply next year.

Every person who applies should already have proof of their safety courses so we don't get people applying so a designated hunter can fill the non hunters tag.

This isn't a substance hunt. The licence should be purchased 6 weeks before the hunt so a second draw could offer those disqualified tags to legitimate hunters.

Beg to differ with you. There are LOTS of hunters opposed to the 5 day season - guys who know how to hunt and know you do not need a 5 day season to do it.

When are we going to wake up????

Keep the 3 day hunt the way it is, and ADD another season.......cow season, calf season, season with primitive weapons..... the options are endless. THIS would give us FAR MORE OPPORTUNITY...but no, we settle for a measly 2 more days on what we already have - a season virtually EVERY hunter complains about because it's too early.

What was it William Wallace said? "You're so concerned with squabbling for the scraps from Longshank's table that you've missed your God-given right to something better". Man - if that doesn't sum up the [past few years with moose here in NB nothing does. Squabble over scraps when we could have a Cadillac.

They have more power given to them, this is new this year. They can enforce the laws the same way a RCMP would.

I can't see why people are against a 5 day Moose hunt, but hey to each his opinion. For all it is, make the season a month long, the same quotas will be given, so not more Moose will be LEGALLY harvested,, the poachers will still poach wether it is 3 days or 3 months.

I'm not sure why you say "guys who know how to hunt and know you do not need a 5 day season to do it"

Is the harvesting of a Moose the only reason why you hunt??

I personally don't believe in a viable 2 season hunt, just because 99% of the hunters now a days, hunt over bait, salt licks etc. people hunting the 2nd season will be at there spot on the 1st season to drive away any and all hunters roaming around their spot. In my opinion there'll just be more fighting than there already is, but that's just my opinion

What I think we really need in N.B. is not more seasons, but more hunting opportunities for the hunters. We can't allocate a license to every hunter who applies in the draw, but we sure could allocate a license to groups of hunters, and depending on how many groups there would be in the prov. maybe groups of hunters would get a license every 3-4 years instead of waiting a lifetime for one.

Main problem with all the fighting isn't the season lengths or time of year..
its the lack of sportsmanship among hunters nowadays..

It happens the same for Deer . Bear.. Duck.. whatever.
People are the problem..(not the seasons), and it just seems to get worse and worse unfortunately...

No it doesn't take 5 days to shoot a moose .

The hunters I take in usually are successful the first or second day but they do not always shoot the animal they hoped to.

3 days takes away from the quality of the hunt that a 5 day hunt has.

Who cares who draws the tag is my thought, its the fun we have scouting and at the camps before and after.

Personally I like a 2 1/2 old bull to eat but most hunters want the older bulls with the beautiful horns.

I usually get to hunt every year in NL or Quebec as well.

Your Bang on Mu'in, sportsmanship is a thing of the past. Now its all competition and bragging rights. A lot of lazy people that wont do their homework and just hijack other peoples hard work they put in.

More seasons DOES mean More opportunity......Am I missing something???

THE NUMER ONE COMPLAINT OF MOOSE HUNTERS IS......."I NEVER GET DRAWN!!!!!!!"

a longer season LESSENS the chance!

More seasons INCREASE the chance.

Hello????
Not sure if I catch what you are saying here, are you saying that a longer season really lessens the chance at being drawn??

I think more would get drawn if actual applicants were pre screened to make sure they weren't some old 85 year old aunt on your wife's side applying.

But she can or he can fill out the proper paper work that they used to hunt.
Who said in the book that a 85 year old Grand Ma couldn't apply for Moose?

Who said that after 65 you are not allowed to hunt Moose?

Who said that in order to apply for Moose you had to be 6', 200lbs and be able to kill a cougar with a knife?

IT IS A DRAW, anyone can and will apply, I don't care if they apply because they love to hunt, or if they apply, because their son's brother in law loves to hunt

IT IS STILL A DRAW.

There are ways to improve the Draw so people don't go 25-30 years before being drawn, we just have to put our heads together and work on system.

One such system is what I was saying earlier in this post, Prioritize Group Hunting, apply as a GROUP, there's only a handful of people who hunt Moose alone,

most people hunt as a group, 3, 4, 5 or more. Ontario as such a system in place and it would be very easy to do a similar system here, there are pros and cons sure, but

we just have to adapt the system to the wants and need of the hunters in N.B.

Ppl hunting out of other ppl stands, shooting their hard earned animals that they couldn't hunt because they had to work that day. Hasn't happened to me yet but I know guys who have had it happen to them. There is no respect in the woods. It's all about the kill to too many ppl now
I get what you mean, happend to me in 2011 with a Bull that I shot and was waiting for a while before going to look for it, a bunch of guys drove around the corner and ran it off,, I lost it :(

But on the other side of the coin, you can put all the money in the bank on a spot, the Moose or Deer or Bear that goes to that spot is NOT YOURS until you have shot, killed and tagged it.

Anyone driving, walking, running or whatever that gets a shot at it before you, is as much entitled to it as you who spent the $$$$ .

I just heard that this year you will not be allowed to make Salt licks for Moose,, a recent survey from DNR says that a too large # of Moose have High Blood Pressure and that they have to cut on Salt :p

If I was a moose..
id be more concerned with "lead" poising ... than High Blood pressure... :)

Why do people want a longer season? To increase their odds of bagging a moose. Bag more moose, success rates go up. Success rates go up, number of moose tags issued goes DOWN.

If success rates do NOT go up with a longer season, it means the herd is dropping....and that definitely is not good.

Most here should realize moose herds in central and southern NB are on the way DOWN.

" Bag more moose, success rates go up. Success rates go up, number of moose tags issued goes DOWN. "

Makes 100% sense to me ... It has to balance .. one way or the other...

More Moose harvested over a longer stretch will inevitably have to lead to fewer tags issued...

The numbers killed will dictate this..

Now, couple a larger harvest with a bad winter or 2 etc and you will definitely see a tag reduction..

No person should be permitted to apply except those that are going to actually hunt. (Perhaps a card proving the hunters safety course)

They should be able to prove they can shoot and manage in the outdoors including some basic survival skills and navigation training.(compass, GPS etc)

This include a reasonable shooting test as required.
The more you comment the less sense you make,, not want to jump on your case, but these don't make any sense at all, ,,, maybe they should drop every one who wants to hunt, with just a knife and a match on a deserted island somewhere to see if you can survive,, the ones who can't survive will die, therefore less people who apply,, duhhhh

I say only people who are 6'3'' or more, who weigh 235lbs or more, wear a size 12 shoe, play guitar and sing should be able to apply for Moose...

You don't need to be able to shoot Shit in order to hunt Moose,, they made a second gun available because people were complaining they couldn't carry a firearm,,

now we want them to make us past a shooting test,,, THEY WILL NEVER COME BACK WITH THE SHOOTING TEST,,, IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO DO with the new firearm regulations Canada has in place.

This does make sense Axeman, but what is it do yous want,, a tag every year?

It will never happend.

I see a longer season like this,, there's +/- 4500 tags available every year,, wether we kill those 4500 in 3 days, 5 days, 3 months or more, doesn't change a damn thing on the # of tags that are allocated,,,, if they allocate that # it's because at some point in their herd management, they figure the herd can support such a loss every year.

When we have enough Moose in N.B. to support a tag for anyone who wants one, WE will complain because we are over run with them,, NFLD is a good example.

We had 5 days hunt for the last 2 years, 3,728 harvested in 2015 out of a possibility of 4 592 and 3,683 harvested in 2014,, 1% increase, but still far from the quotas allocated

Give hunters a month and some will still not be successful

Do you need 5 days to kill a Moose? Nope , some do it in 15mins of hunting, others don't get any at all, and it has nothing to do with who is a better hunter.

Moose thrive in the type of Forests we complain about for Deer, clear cuts, hard woods, bogs etc.,,,, the more they destroy the Deer habitat, the more Moose we're gonna have.

N.B. is surround by 8' fences so we don't kill ourselves driving down the highway.
