Bear hunting question

996 Views 8 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  trapper2011
I do not have the time to bait, as much, or as frequently as i have read. Is there another way to hunt bear, an atractant of some sort? I know that there is a natural food source bringing bears to the property that I will be hunting, but would like to up my odds as much as possible given my time constraints for baiting. Any info would be very helpfull. Thanks.

Just make yourself a shaker barrell, if you use one, you'll only have to bait once every week or so. There great because there's always bait there & not as much human activity.
Found the plans for one today, and plan on putting it in the woods next weekend, thanks.

if possible
try cooking a little bit of maple flavored bacon just before you sit at your spot
but try to do it away from your exact spot!
dont want the bear to sneak up behind you and think you are a big strip of tasty bacon!
lol

I have never actually hunted bear but watched a program in which they were hunting bear in Northern New Brunswick, I think the show was called Bull Run or something like that, it was on wildlife network anyway. He stated that if you use whats called a honey burn it will work mostly every time. All's he did was take an old pot, put about 2 inch's of honey in it, placed it away from his stand and put a small gel burner under it and let it boil and burn while he was in the stand, and let it burn out, and then he waited. Now of course he got one, that's T.V. but he says he hunts bears in N.B. quite often and this is his method, so I will be trying it this year as it will be my first bear hunt.I dont have a lot of time either but figured this sounds like something to try, and hopefully this spring I will be posting some pics.
He did the honey burn on an active bait, even if he didn't do the burn, a bear still would have showed up without the burn because he has been eating there for a while now.
A honey burn is a great way to attract bears to get them coming to your bait or to attract new bears to your bait & to just put scent into the air. If you were to just randomly go into the woods anywhere & do a honey burn, you probably won't see a thing.
Hey well that's good to know cause that's what I was gonna try this year...lol...so you would suggest doing a honey burn while waiting on a baited area? Its funny they made it look like he was just setting up and the honey burn brought the bear in...thats tv for ya...lol.
If you want to try bear hunting without setting up a bait I recommend you try hunting some feilds at green up. When you notice green grass & dandelions starting to pop up you can bet the bears will be there laying it to them.
