Just my 2 cents..to buy any questionable product in the U S. is not a great decision. If you save a few dollars & then lose it at customs you are not a winner.I know the prices are unfair here but good deals can be found & you support local business...

It's funny how a simple query evolves into some nationalistic bullsh## or support your local retailer mumbo jumbo. A lot of times your local retailer has been screwing you locally for years! A little bit of competition is a good thing. It seems to me that that in the U.S. they will go the extra mile to get your business while here the retailers figure they have you by the short and curlies. I'm not saying that they are all like that but supply and demand does come into it and you buy what you see (on sale if possible) as opposed to special order and never have it arrive or not in stock, don't carry it, etc. I have had very positive experiences with Better Buy Sports in St. John but if I am stateside what the heck (and yes it better be 50% off because by the time you pay for duties etc.. you get the picture.)I can buy any riflescope I want in the US but I just can't legally take it out of the US due to their laws. Canada Customs probably just want their duties, I'm not sure.

Pricing is crazy here in Canada when it comes to optics. Example Nikon Buckmaster 3-9x40 BDC reticule $319.00 in Canada discontinued, in Maine for $169.00 us (Cabelas or Kittery Trading Post)! Not to impressed with that!

The WalMart in Calais has Leupold scopes at very good prices the last time I looked. As a matter of fact, all of the optics there were priced real good. As far as them selling to you, it's not a problem, the problem is that it is illegal to export them without a license. Seeing as you just drive past the U.S. side when you are coming back, that is not a problem. At the Canadian side it is o.k. to bring them in , you just have to pay the HST on them if they were made in the U.S. and maybe a little duty if it was made elsewhere.

The ammo is another story. It is illegal for the merchants to sell a canadian fireams or ammo. I'm not sure on reloading supplies.

Basically it's illegal until you cross the dotted line back into Canada. In the strict sense you need export papers for ammo, scopes, gun parts etc. but a lot of us do it all the time. If you have been over for 48 hours you can bring up to $800 duty and tax free so a $700 scope would be just that, $700 US. Where the problem is going to be someday is what has happened in some of the western States bordering on BC and AB. There has been reporting of officials (not sure if it's Customs, State Police, ATF or what) checking Canadian cars leaving the US. If they start doing that in Maine we will have have a problem.
