first of all if you had deer coming before they know theyre is a food source there. Mineral licks are great but they tend to be not as useful in a couple of weeks. Apples are great but only put a small pile out this time of year. Keep a close eye on them and for tracks around them (unless of course you have a trail cam) but if you begin to put apples out this early and continue to do so for the remainder of time till hunting season your probabilty of attracting a bear is guarenteed. I know some very knowledgable hunters who scout hard to know where the deer are and once into hunting season usually after the first week only put apples out as most bears are into hibernation at that point. In my opinion this cmer deer is a joke and way over priced same as 3 day harvest, and in most times the deer are already in the area so you dont need bait. So the best bait in hard time scouting the woods and finding different areas to hunt, and a monster mature buck doesnt get that rack over the years by hitting a big pile of apples standing out of place in the middle of the woods!!!!!!!!!

If you can get Does into your bait,I don't care how smart the old buck is,he will be following. My friend puts apples out and there is no apple trees around, but he has bucks and does coming in,he always make sure there is apples there.I have seen many a bear well into deer season and beyond depending on weather and food.

yes your right simple life, if you get your does the ole mature buck will come.
yes depending on the weather determines when the bear hibernates.

Okay so if the weather is warm and the bear doesnt hibernate, till after hunting season, what does that do to the deer rut? and the mature buck coming into to ride the doe?

you lug apples out all summer week after week, may get some does, but if the bear finds them hes going to demolish them and consitantly demolish them until he hibernates. Alot of time, some cases money, and alot of human scent thrown in your area.

If you are a true old school hunter you need to outsmart the buck, if its a mature old bruiser thats everyone wants in theyre trophy case then you must truly be on top of your game, and this includes scouting hard all summer and understanding how this buck goes about his life. A mature buck will eat apples but less likely this will bring him out of his habitat in which he will not trust.

My point to the matter was that yes apples will work as bait, but your taking the risk of getting your bait a snack for a bear. The best bait in my mind is hardwork by scouting, if you want to earn the points every fall then that is truly the way. Alot of lucky guys have the opportunity of getting a bruiser over apples but those are rare occasions. Hey dont get me wrong i put out apples and mineral licks by one of my tree stands every year and have had bears in the past but since ive moved my apples later in the season, have not drawn the bear and have had luck with deer. But i know my percentages are extremely lower of getting a b&c buck by sitting in that stand rather then out in the woods and outsmarting the beast

It slows down, but that buck is never too far away from the doe's

I don't lug apples at all in the summer,I hunt a orchard and put my apples down when they are pretty well gone off the trees.
why would you lug out apples out in the summer?

A mature buck will eat apples but less likely this will bring him out of his habitat in which he will not trust.

Bring the doe's and the buck will follow,

This was a topic by Savage has gotton away from original post and I am done arguing with you.Everybody got their personal preference, but don't bash them.I hunt to be in the woods and am thankful I can go out and really don't care if I get a B/C buck. You talk of old school hunting, well when you are 40 or 50 then you can talk of old school hunting.

Who cares if it attracts bears, bears will not frequent apples near as much as deer, I have been on stand on several occasions where deer have been at apples, a bear comes in deer leave, bear eats and leaves deer come back in. Start 4 or 5 baits, place trail cameras if you have a few nice bucks comin in continue with bait if not move on. Start bait Sept. 1

I have had good results with cmere deer liquid concentrate, but I have tried the 3 day harvest, and found the deer wouldnt touch it. Never tried the powder, but a buddy of mine used it and said the deer had licked it right up as fast as he put it out.

$45 a pail, are you kidding me! Gimmick if I have ever heard one, you think this is gonna bring in a bucks. If there are no bucks in the area then no matter how good it tastes there wont be bucks eating it. Cant see a small 2.5 gallon pail lasting longer than a few days, prety steep pail of apples f you ask me. But hey to each there own I suppose. Do some research on things like tinks 69 and scentlok and scentblocker, I am sure you will be suprised in your findings.

hey savage,
if the deer were only coming in at night, ive heard of a trick but never tried it.... put a blanket over the apples at night and place rocks on the corners then in the am take the blanket off..... that of course if you are close to your stand but could not be 1005 sure if it works or not.... im sure if you put work into your area you will have deer coming in constantly, but like bear hunter said put some research into it by looking up comments of the products.... everyone has there own luck with there own thing, but now is a good time to start going around to the municpal apple trees and collect some apples if that is what interests you.

you are intitled to your own opion but it does make a natural lick for them whitch keeps the deer/moose in your area and brings the ones there to where you want them once they find it thats what you like and they do love it and if a guy lets the little bucks walk he will have big bucks in his or her area just refresh the lick site every 2 to 3 months with a bit you do not have to use the whole pail in one shot .

i use apples and had lots of success
i also went across the border and picked up some of that rage deer lick
screwed it to a tree about 4 ft in the air
i find it works well...
as far as bears...i have had bears hit the apples as late as the 3rd week
if bears are around.....no matter what you use...they will clean it up!
back about 3 yrs ago i moved my blind 3 times!
and of course had deer coming....even a scrape at 2 of the spots....but never got a deer!
that is why i hunt bear now!!!!
what a better way to get rid of them...!!!
