Extra week for deer hunting with bow/black powder?

6262 Views 85 Replies 23 Participants Last post by  SIMPLELIFE
We now have Sunday hunting for three Sundays in deer season but what if DNR took back the three Sundays and gave us a full week for hunting deer at the end of deer season(the last week of November)...using either black powder or bow? Would this extra hunt time...six days... appeal to those who favor Sunday hunting? Would it impact the deer harvest negatively? What do you people think?

I don't like this idea.

I work Monday to Friday, and because our shop is small, I cannot get time off through the week to go hunting. So my deer season is pretty much limited to Saturdays. Having the three Sundays makes it easier to get out for me.

I am also of the mindset that I am not willing to give anything back to DNR that we (hunters) have lobbied for and won. Its hard enough to deal with them on the best of days.
Same here the Sunday hunting has doubled the amount of days i am able to hunt. I would like to see Sunday hunting year round. As far as your extra week goes I would like to see that added and I dont think the deer population would be negatively affected. On that note you will likely never see that extra week at the end because the deer could be starting to yard up(northen areas?). That was the answer I got anyway.

as far as sunday hunting....it never really mattered to me if we got to hunt on sunday or not!
dont get me wrong...i do hunt on sunday and it is great for the guys that only get the weekends!
but i will say it was nice to get to sleep in on sunday after a long week of getting up at 4 am.
I usually save most of my vacation for hunting season so i am off for 3 weeks to a month during the season!
so..makes for a long month when your up at 4 am 7 days a week.....
now on that note...
an extra week at the end of the season would be nice BUT if they were going to do that, i rather see them start a week later, instead of starting oct 4th maybe start oct 11 (yes i hunt with a bow)
maybe have the same season as nova scotia?
doesnt there season start later then ours and end early dec???
Boys , don't get me started on this , I've got too much to do today .

There's no question our season ends too early . I'd like to see our regular firearms season adjusted (later start/finish) a bit first though . Barring that if DNR would OK a primative season that would extend the Deer season I'd be all for it . No need to drop Sundays ,we don't have enough hunters in the woods these days to make a difference .

I've herd all the reasons/excuses why we shouldn't hunt deer later , fact is if DNR wanted to do it they could make it work .

November 17th is WAY too early to begin Christmas shoping .
I am with GG on this one. Don't give back the Sunday hunting we just got it and it was a long fought battle to get that much. Instead of extending the season just start it later.
IMO rifle season should start the first Monday in Nov and run for 4 weeks including Sunday
Archery season would start on Thanksgiving Monday each year which I believe would delay that opening by 1 week

Adding a week probably has alot more to do with $$$ than anything. DnR most likely can't afford to patrol that extra week or just don't want to. If you had the entire 4 weeks in Nov I think alot of guys would be more than happy with that
I can't imagine one hunter's schedule making a reason to deny another's opportunity?
The season ends to early, I don't care what you use for a hunting tool.
GG for premier!!
Cdog.
i agree with GG also

Hey predator 1 - don't you work for DNR? Why don't you make some of these changes in there?
Black powder boys had the opportunity to get an extra week on the end of deer season about 8-10 years ago for primitives and couldn't agree so it never happened.

I don't want to see bow season pushed back any further and personally I'd like to see it start earlier, like the Monday following Moose Season. Drop the gun season back a week and put a crossbow season in the middle.

Someone has obviously logged in on BT's computer and is playing practical jokes!
For me personaly I would like to keep sunday hunting, adding a week to the season wouldn't realy give me much more time to hunt because my deer season ends on the second tuesday of november due to lobster fishing....but on the other hand an extra week would be nice for when we get a blowy day.
hey axeman...
I do work for DNR presently and I have no problem with Sunday hunting to stay as is...I just wanted your responses. I have lobbied the powers that be to add another week , and I suggested using BP and bow, due to the response I got from DNR initially about their concerns with "might shoot too many bucks"...I even requested that they consider adjusting the season dates to take in the month of November..but the "PTB" don't listen to my suggestions. I'm not high enough on the ladder to be qualified to make such suggestions I guess...
As far as Sunday hunting is concerned, I was fine with it the old way. It gave me a non-hunting day to maybe move my stand to a new location for the following week. But on the other hand, it's kind of nice to get another day added to my week hunt. I agree with some that it would be nice to see the whole season moved later by a week. The first week of October is usually too warm for a harvested deer to keep well. And the three weeks end, just as the rut is beginning. I do like the idea of a late bow season week. I love hunting with the bow in cold weather! Last fall I was in my stand with my bow, every day of the last week of gun season.
Any extra hunting would be great, but a week of blackpowder, first week of December, open to anyone with a tag left, with a point restriction of some type would be a good hunt. I agree with Greyghost as well - our season is way too early right now.
I am with many of you weekend hunters, having that extra day (sunday) is a nice treat! I am unable to get time off during the season because thats when i am busy at work (atv dealer). I do agree that our season is too early, hunting deer in warm weather just doesnt feel right! I personally have never shot a bow, but would love to give it a try. I could understand having a short season in december for you bow hunters though. just my opinion!
