Also make sure they can't just carry it away; small chunks. You'll notice that it's nearly impossible to avoid stretches where you just can't get out to top up so keep a staple food like oats or corn in plentiful supply to keep them visiting It's cheap and easy. On a sidenote, I've noticed over the years that my bears tended to hit the oats that had sprouted even when tastier bait was available, so I started more or less sowing my oats all around the ground instead of in a pile... deadly. I even have bear that hit them well into summer long loooooooong after I stopped baiting for the season.. keeps them around.
